( JNF )

Research is expensive, but no one has yet found a cheaper way of making progress.

JNF continues to place a high priority on maintaining research across the broad range of activities included in its project portfolio. The tremendous commitment to and investment in research and development throughout its history has laid the foundation for the remarkable achievements of JNF.

Working in conjunction with other academic and scientific institutions, both in Israel and abroad, JNF is responsible today for funding all agricultural R & D stations throughout Israel.

In the quest for improved technology in all spheres of its land and water development programs, current projects include, among others: the search for superior select tree species, growing new agricultural crops in recycled waters, the efficacy of vegetative growth in pushing back encroaching desert sands, water management, and water harvesting methods.

(IALC logo) JNF's research in soil conservation has literally put Israel in the forefront of this critical worldwide issue as a founding member of the International Arid Lands Consortium (IALC) . Together with JNF in the IALC, The University of Arizona, The University of Illinois, New Mexico State University, South Dakota State University, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, the Desert Research Institute (UCCSN) in Nevada and Jordanian and Egyptian counterparts work to find solutions to arid land problems and advance the cause of Middle East peace. In the quest for serious innovation in all spheres of water development, JNF is paving the way for an improved quality of life not only in Israel, but also for other countries in the world's arid regions.

As custodians of the Earth, today we face problems and possibilities on an unprecedented scale. Often the negative - famine, overpopulation and disease, pollution, degradation and depletion - receives more attention than the positive. New technologies and approaches, however, provide us with innumerable opportunities for long-term improvement of the quality of life if we remain vigilant and sensitive to sustaining our precious natural resources.
