Israel is the only country of the 184 nations with which the United States has diplomatic relations, where we neither recognize the designated capital nor have our embassy located in that city. Jerusalem is the undivided capital of Israel and the seat of the Israeli government. For nearly five decades, however, most of the world, including the United States, has refused to acknowledge this unilateral fact. That is why Congress overwhelmingly passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995. This landmark bill declares for the first time in history that, as a statement of official U.S. policy, Jerusalem must be recognized as the undivided, eternal capital of Israel.
